FSX Weather Bridge

About

FSX Weather Bridge is a real-time weather injection system for Microsoft Flight Simulator X (FSX) that fetches real-world aviation weather data from AviationWeather.gov and injects it into the simulator via FSUIPC. Fly with current METAR conditions—wind, visibility, clouds, and pressure—updated automatically based on your aircraft’s position.

The application runs in the background with a system tray icon and offers a modern web interface for monitoring, configuration, and an interactive map of your position and nearby weather stations.

Use Case

Built for flight sim enthusiasts and pilots who want realistic, real-time weather in FSX:

  • Real-World Conditions — Practice approaches and procedures in actual current weather
  • METAR-Based Weather — Uses official aviation METAR/TAF from AviationWeather.gov
  • Position-Aware — Automatically selects nearby reporting stations as you fly
  • Manual Override — Enter custom METAR/TAF for specific scenarios or testing

Key Features

  • 🌤️ Real-time Weather Injection — Fetches and injects current METAR data from AviationWeather.gov
  • 🎯 Smart Station Selection — Selects nearby weather stations based on aircraft position
  • 🌊 Smooth Transitions — Gradual weather changes to avoid unrealistic, abrupt shifts
  • 📊 Interactive Web Interface — Web-based UI for monitoring and configuration
  • 🗺️ Map Visualization — Map showing aircraft position and weather stations
  • 📡 TAF Support — Optional TAF (Terminal Aerodrome Forecast) for forecast data
  • 🔧 Manual Weather Mode — Override with manual METAR/TAF input
  • 📂 System Tray — Runs in the background with tray icon; open Web UI, view logs, or exit from the menu

Technologies Used

Python HTML Batchfile VBScript FSUIPC

How It Works

  1. Fetches Weather Data — Downloads METAR/TAF from AviationWeather.gov
  2. Selects Stations — Chooses nearby stations from aircraft position (via FSUIPC)
  3. Parses Weather — Extracts wind, visibility, pressure, clouds, etc. from METAR
  4. Smooths Transitions — Applies gradual changes to avoid abrupt updates
  5. Injects Weather — Writes METAR strings to FSX via FSUIPC offset 0xB000
  6. Monitors Status — Web UI shows real-time status, map, and configuration

Requirements & Quick Start

Requirements:

  • Windows (tested on Windows 10/11)
  • Python 3.12 (32-bit) — Must be 32-bit for FSUIPC compatibility
  • Microsoft Flight Simulator X (FSX)
  • FSUIPC4 — Installed and running with FSX

Run install.bat to install dependencies and create the config, then start with run_hidden.bat (background) or run.bat (console). The web interface is at http://127.0.0.1:8080.
